What elevator inspection requires

Each elevator device must undergo an annual Category 1 inspection and test by a licensed elevator inspector, witnessed by an approved agency, with the report filed with DOB within 60 days. Applicable devices also need a Category 5 test — a more thorough, load/safety test — every five years. Any deficiencies must be corrected and an Affirmation of Correction (AOC) filed.

How to comply

  1. Schedule the annual Cat 1 test for each device with a licensed inspector and witnessing agency.
  2. Schedule Cat 5 tests on the five-year cycle for applicable devices.
  3. Correct deficiencies and file the AOC.
  4. File all reports within the 60-day window.
